Understanding Orthopedic Therapy
Physical therapy can play an important role in managing a variety of orthopedic conditions. Orthopedic physical therapists assess, manage, and treat disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, as well as rehabilitate patients after they have undergone orthopedic surgery.
Our therapists specialize in orthopedic therapy, which is most often found in an outpatient clinic setting. Symptoms that are treated in our clinic include: pain, swelling, decreased mobility and decreased strength. To alleviate pain, we use a variety of treatments including: heat/ice, ultrasound, cold laser (low-level light laser), electric stimulation, and warm-water therapy.
Increased circulation, which contributes to healing the injured tissue and relaxes muscle spasm. Unless this decreased mobility and stiffness, which occurs with the healing process, is addressed, the joint can suffer further degenerative changes. To increase strength and mobility, physical therapists suggest and advise patients on individualized exercises, which may include a land or pool therapy regimen.
